“Retreat Your Soul…”

Memphis, Tennessee 1972:

“Seated behind a primitive mixing board in a tiny Quonset hut at 64 Flicker Street, just a stones’ throw from the Illinois Central railroad tracks, Pastor Juan D. Shipp crackles over the AM airwaves with an electrifying array of the latest and greatest in gospel quartet sounds. With an audience that spans the width and breadth of the Bluff City, from truck cabs to taxi stands, from Mid-Town to Orange Mound, from the Peabody Hotel to Payne’s Barbecue, if you’re a fan of Memphis’s thriving gospel scene, you’re locked into “Juan D” at K-WAM, “the Mighty 990,” the very station that — twenty years earlier, during its first incarnation as KWEM across the river in West Memphis, Arkansas — had first brought blues wizard Howlin’ Wolf to the ears of recording engineer Sam Phillips. Now, two decades later, having revolutionized the music world with Sun Records and its holy trinity of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash, the Wolf still remained Phillips’ favorite. “This is where the soul of man never dies,” he’d memorably declared of the six-foot-six gravel-voiced force of nature, a description that could just as easily be applied to so many of the artists whose records Shipp is now spinning over the air…”.

Rev. Juan D. Shipp was de drijvende kracht achter de vele Black Gospel-opnames die in de jaren zeventig uit Memphis, Tennessee kwamen. Als predikant bij de Missionary Baptist Church in Greater Abyssinia, had Shipp ook een gospel-radioshow op K-WAM, waar hij gospel albums draaide als “Juan D.”. In de overtuiging dat "lokale artiesten een beter geluid verdienen", werkte hij samen met Clyde Leoppard, een voormalige Sun Studio-drummer, die eigenaar was van Tempo Recording Studio in het centrum van Memphis. Shipp begon met het opnemen en uitbrengen van singles van professionele kwaliteit voor vele lokale en regionale gospelgroepen op zijn eigen kleine boetieklabel, D-Vine Spirituals. Al snel vlotten de zaken en begon hij een secundair label, JCR, voor opkomende artiesten die een plaat wilden persen, maar de D-Vine-cut niet haalden. Zeventien van deze nummers zijn samengebracht op ‘The Last Shall Be First: the JCR Records Story, Volume 1’, geproduceerd door Rev. Shipp.

Elk nummer op deze compilatie is opgenomen door een andere gospelgroep. The Masonic Travelers nam hun populaire "Rock My Soul" op en de eerbiedwaardige Stars of Faith hun uptempo "Sitting Down". Beide groepen hadden een succesvolle carrière. Hoewel andere artiesten misschien nooit een andere opname hebben gemaakt, mogen ze zeker niet over het hoofd worden gezien. Ik doel hier o.a. op het openingsnummer "Keep On Pushing" van The Calvary Nightingales met zijn bluesachtige gitaarbegeleiding tot het afsluitende "Sinner Man (What You Gonna Do)" van het vrouwen kwartet, de Bible Tones. Er zijn nog genoeg pareltjes -ook andere dan gospels- die deze set de moeite waard maken: de bluesboogie van The Pilgrimairs: “Father, Guide Me, Teach Me”, The Silver Wings: “Call On Him”, The Vigil Lights of Holly Springs, MS: “What a Meeting”, Dixie Wonders: “Someone Who Cares”, The Hewlett Sisters: “In the Last Day”, The Gospel Travelers: ”Where Are You Going to Run” en The Bible Tones: “Sinner Man (What You Gonna Do)”.

Het feit dat Afrikaans-Amerikaanse kerken lange tijd smeltkroes zijn geweest voor het muzikale talent van Memphis, zijn deze gospelgroepen een integraal onderdeel van het verhaal van soulmuziek. ‘The Last Shall Be First: the JCR Records Story’ biedt daarom een uniek overzicht van regionale gospelmuziek uit de jaren zeventig die de hedendaagse muziekscene van Memphis uit die tijd weerspiegelt, van de ziel van Stax Records tot de blues, R&B en rock opgenomen in Sun Studio. Deze compilatie is een belangrijke aanvulling op de documentatie van Memphis-muziek, en de liner notes van Michael Hurtt bieden verdere historische context.
